14th August 2011

The destination today for the start of our hike was Schlegeis Reservoir. What an amazing location at the end of one of the valleys.

Enough drooling over the scenery, it is off for our hike to Friesenberghaus, 5km to get there and 700metres height gain up the mountain.

You should be able to make out the hut in the middle of the photo.

The trail started on a rough  forest track with lots of waterfalls draining from the mountain above.

But the shade from the forest was soon left behind and we were well and truly hiking above the tree-line with the barren rocky mountains towering above us. The trail became steeper and rockier and I found it hard going. Probably too ambitious for our first hike. But the views were outstanding and reaching the hut was well worth the 3 hours of effort.

A very tiring hard hike to start off with. 5 hours return and it has left me concerned for the other hikes I have planned that are in excess of 700metres height gain. Will just have to wait and see how we feel each day. Rain is forecast for tomorrow so that will give us a hard-earned rest. Some shopping perhaps.

I will also add that the temperatures here have been in the mid-thirties. Extremely hot!!!! Our shopping tomorrow will be for light long-sleeve shirts.
